A new laboratory was opened at SPbGASU
On October 1, 2019, a new laboratory for road-building materials was opened at SPbGASU. It will test soil, reinforced soil and all materials used in the road construction.
“Laboratory classes are an integral part of the educational process, forming the necessary professional competencies for our students, future specialists. A new laboratory equipped at the state-of-the-art level will make training more exciting and efficient,” said Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Svetlana Golovina.
First of all, Bachelor’s degree students of the “Motor roads” specialization will be trained here. The training will be quite intensive due to the many laboratory classes.
What students can do in the new laboratory
According to the head of the SPbGASU Department of Roads, Bridges and Tunnels Maria Klekovkina, a laboratory equipped with modern equipment will allow undergraduate and graduate students to receive primary professional skills and conduct research work on the selection of recipes for asphalt mixes of various grades; to verify the quality of the asphalt mix and its physical and mechanical properties; carry out tests of materials, organic binders, finished mixtures for their compliance with standards.
In the course of practical exercises, students will get acquainted with the organization of the laboratory, modern instruments and equipment, methods for designing the composition of asphalt mixes, modern technologies for preparing hot, cold and crushed stone mastic asphalt mixes, and cast asphalt mixes.
Laboratory equipment
The participants in the opening ceremony were shown a press for testing bitumen concrete for shear, compression, splitting and tensile bending; they got acquainted with a device that determines the maximum density of bitumen concrete according to the methodology actively implemented by Rosavtodor and the Ministry of Transport of Russia. The laboratory also has a device for determining the temperature of bitumen fragility, an oven, a climate freezer, a vacuum unit for determining the average density of water saturation of bitumen concrete, a normal hardening chamber for bitumen concrete and hardened soils. There is a stamp to help checking the quality of asphalt: the material will be poured into molds, kept in water at a certain temperature, and then crushed by a 50-kilogram weight.

“Science does not stand still. In order for students to understand what awaits them in reality, it was decided to create such a laboratory and equip it with the state-of-the-art equipment. It is possible to carry out laboratory and practical exercises on this equipment,” said Pavel Petukhov, head of the laboratory.
