Commemorative symposium dedicated to Vasily Kosyakov was held at SPbGASU
On 1st October 2021, Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering organized a symposium entitled “Vasily Kosyakov: Architect, Artist, Director and Teacher” to share information related to the work of the outstanding representative of the Institute of Civil Engineers’ architectural school.
Vasily Kosyakov
Vasily Antonovich Kosyakov (1862–1921) was an architect, artist and teacher. He is the author of Byzantine-style religious buildings and Art Nouveau tenement houses. He was the first elected director of the Institute of Civil Engineers (1905–1921). Working both independently and in collaboration with his brothers – the civil engineer Vladimir Kosyakov (1866–1922) and the architect Georgy Kosyakov (1872–1925) – he designed a variety of buildings in St. Petersburg, Kronstadt, Peterhof, Libava (now Liepaja, Latvia), Astrakhan and Batumi. His works belong to the Neo-Byzantine and the Russian Revival styles.
The speakers at the symposium were Professor Ekaterina Voznyak, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, SPbGASU, Doctor of Architecture; Yuri Saveliev, Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Doctor of Arts, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts; Maxim Filipovich, CEO of the North-West Expert Union LLC; and Deputy Head of the Scientific and Technical Library at SPbGASU Galina Mashevskaya.
Participants visited an archival exhibition at the SPbGASU scientific and technical library and took a bus tour to see Vasily Kosyakov's works. The tour included visits to the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God at the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent, the Epiphany Church on Gutuevsky Island, the Kazan Church belonging to the Valaam Monastery, the Dormition Church at Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment, and the Naval Cathedral in Kronstadt.{gallery name="КОСЯКОВ10"}
In 2021 and 2022, SPbGASU is planning a number of events in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Vasily Kosyakov's death as well as to celebrate the 190th anniversary since the foundation of the university. These will include public lectures about the life and work of Vasily Kosyakov, an exhibition of works by the Kosyakov brothers in the SPbGASU Library, a special issue of the university newspaper devoted to Vasily Kosyakov, posting information about the architect on the university website and social media, laying flowers at the monument to the architect erected near the Kazan Church at the Resurrection Novodevichy Convent, etc.
