
26 April is a memorable date in Russia - we celebrate the Day of honored members of accidents aftermath and victims in radiation accidents and catastrophes. On this day in 1986, one of the largest man-made disasters in history occurred - the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
As a result of the accident, the nuclear reactor was completely destroyed, radioactive substances were released into the environment and spread over large areas. Many people have lost their health, home, source of livelihood.
The members of accident aftermath - workers, scientists, military and volunteers - showed great courage. Risking life and health, they did everything possible to avoid the further spread of radiation, to protect the population from its harmful effects.
Every year on 26 April, the whole world pays tribute to the memory and respect of the members of this and other radiation tragedies. The memorable date is intended to serve as a reminder of the danger of nuclear accidents.
