Day of an unknown soldier

4 Dec 2014

On December, 3 Russia celebrated a new holiday – Day of an unknown soldier. The order of its establishment was signed by President of the Russian Federation Vladimir V. Putin on November 5, 2014. In the opinion of the deputies, who were unanimous in confirming a new legislative draft, a new holiday will result in a stronger patriotic sense and “is proved by the necessity of increasing perpetuation of the memory, martial prowess and immortal heroism of the Russian and soviet fighters killed during the war in our country and abroad, whose names stayed unknown”.

This date was chosen for a reason. To mark the 25th anniversary of the German and fascist army defeat in Moscow on December 3, 1966 ashes of an unknown soldier was transported from the unmarked grave of soviet soldiers located at the 41st km along the Leningrad highway and ceremonially buried in the Alexandrinsky garden against the walls of the Moscow Kremlin.

“Nobody is forgotten and nothing is forgotten” – these words became a slogan for a holiday. In Saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering. There were held several events in the course of which they remembered those tragic years for the country and the university’s students, professors and alumni who had gone to the front during the World War I, Great Patriotic Wars and had never returned.
