22 August is the Day of the State Flag of the Russian Federation.
The flag is one of the most important symbols of the state. It is always raised on the building of the Presidential Administration and other state bodies. On the days of national holidays, it is customary to hang the flag on residential buildings, on the buildings of public associations, enterprises and organizations.
It is believed that the tricolor was approved on 20 (31) January, 1705 by Peter I. According to the imperial decree, "on all merchant ships that sail along the Moscow River, and along the Volga, and along the Dvina, and along all other rivers and streams for the sake of trade," they must raise a white-blue-red flag. Peter himself drew a pattern and determined the order of the horizontal stripes.
On the National Flag Day, concerts and other festive events are held throughout Russia.
