One of the most mournful historical dates is 8 September. On this day in 1941, an enemy ring closed around Leningrad. This was the start of the 900 terrible days and nights. Residents of the besieged city faced hunger, cold, bombing, and deprivation.

Our university continued to operate under difficult conditions. Its employees carried out orders fr om military organizations and helped the city and the front. In March 1942, teachers and students of LISI were evacuated to Essentuki, and then to Barnaul, wh ere educational and scientific activities continued. In Leningrad, the university resumed work on 19 October, 1943.

In 1945, LISI was awarded the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. Many teachers, staff and students were awarded the medal “For the Defense of Leningrad”.

Today, SPbGASU sacredly preserves the memory of the Great Patriotic War. The names of heroic predecessors are imprinted on the page of the Immortal Regiment and on the memorial plaques of the university.
