Dmitry Zinenkov wins the 2021 BRAUIC international competition
On 11 October, results of the BRAUIC 2021 International Student Competition in Architectural Design and Digital Modelling were announced. The winner in the Architectural Design category is Dmitry Zinenkov with his Master's thesis, which was written at the SPbGASU Department of Architectural Design (now Dmitry is an assistant professor of the Department).
The competition was organized on the initiative of the Belt and Road Architectural University International Consortium (BRAUIC) by Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture (BUCEA) and Beijing International Peace Culture Foundation (BIPCF) with the support of UNESCO, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS) and the Chinese Society of Geodesy, Photogrammetry and Cartography (CSGPC).

BRAUIC is an international consortium of architecture and construction universities established in
2017 on the initiative of the Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture jointly with SPbGASU and other leading higher education institutions in the field of architecture and construction from Russia, China, Poland, France, Armenia, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea and other countries.
The aim of the Consortium is to contribute to the development and strengthening of international cooperation in research, academic mobility and international exchanges.
Dmitry Zinenkov
Under the supervision of Fedor Perov and Olga Kokorina, Associate Professors of the Department of Architectural Design, Dmitry Zinenkov designed a multifunctional public and business centre with landscaping of the adjacent territory in Kronstadt.
"'As Kronstadt has been closed to the public for a long time, today the town is in decline and needs to be developed,” the author explained his choice of project location.
The project area is a 6.5 hectare island, surrounded by a canal and formerly known as the Lumber Yard (the area was designated as a timber warehouse).
The author used an authentic street grid and created a typology of buildings, with a special emphasis on the heritage buildings.
A maritime theme is used for the stylised architectural forms. Wood was chosen as the main finishing material in order to connect the building with the history of the site. The northern façade faces the town, so it uses architectural elements typical of Kronstadt.

The building will include public, office and exhibition areas, a coworking space, a library, a fitness club and a restaurant area.
A dock is planned nearby to facilitate visitor’s access to the multifunctional complex. The promenade complements the infrastructure being the centre’s extension and offering a water view.
As conceived by Dmitry, the centre will become a new point of attraction for Kronstadt: it will create new jobs, attract investments and will demonstrate the tourist potential, and local residents will get a new space for spending their leisure time.
"The topic of Dmitry's final qualifying project coincided with the main focus of the BRAUIC competition: moving passengers along the waterways is now very important for China. However, to be eligible for participation, his concept had to be transformed by emphasizing the centre’s accessibility from the water. It required a lot of work that was done on a serious level," said Olga Kokorina.
Dmitry's victory is not the only achievement of SPbGASU in this competition. Polina Tretyakova's design of a multifunctional cultural centre on a residential bridge, supervised by Konstantin Kolodin, Associate Professor at the Department of Architectural Design, won an honorary prize in the Structural Design category. Bridges that combine functions of a residential building and a thoroughfare are not uncommon, but there are no such facilities in St Petersburg yet. Polina believes an inhabited bridge could link recreational, commercial and residential areas, becoming a new landmark of the town.
Konstantin Kolodin, Fedor Perov and Olga Kokorina were mentioned by the jury as outstanding project supervisors. In addition, SPbGASU was recognized as an honorary participant of the competition.
