Fr om 26 to 29 September, the Sirius Science and Art Park in Sochi hosted the VIII Russian Labour Safety Week. One of the central events of the week was Youth Day, as part of which a competition of project initiatives “Youth and Occupational Safety” was held. The SPbGASU team took first place in this competition with the project “Use of motion capture technology in training to work at heights.”
The team led by Associate Professor at the Department of Technosphere Safety Aleksandr Glukhanov, included fourth-year bachelor's students Valeria Vishnyakova, Vladimir Krasnozhen and Ulyana Baranova.
The authors of the project created an innovative method of teaching safe techniques for working at heights using the NOITOM motion capture system for the Vysota training simulator.
The simulator, put into operation in 2023 at the SPbGASU “Smart Labour” training site, allows to consolidate in practice the acquired theoretical knowledge about methods of safe work at height.
The point of the new technique is to record a standard set of movements of an experienced worker and then compare the set of movements of a trainee with the standard recording. The training is considered successful if the deviation calculated by comparing records does not exceed 20 percent.
The authors of the project believe that the use of a computer program almost completely eliminates the human factor when assessing knowledge and skills. The quality of training in safe working practices at height is being improved. In addition, the survey revealed an increase in students’ satisfaction with the quality of educational services.
In addition to the competition, the SPbGASU representatives participated in other events of the Russian Labour Safety Week.
Aleksandr Glukhanov took part in the job fair, wh ere he told applicants and their parents about the educational process at the university, admission conditions and prospects after graduation.
In addition, Aleksandr Glukhanov, at the invitation of the National Association of Builders (NOSTROY), spoke at the round table “Reducing the level of industrial injuries in construction. Innovative solutions in the field of labour protection" with the report "Innovative educational project: modern educational technologies to ensure occupational safety in the construction industry (2022–2026)." He reported on the SPbGASU achievements in the field of digital solutions for occupational safety training.
Valeria Vishnyakova was impressed by the exhibition of the latest developments in the field of personal protection, catering when working in hazardous working conditions, and training using virtual and augmented reality.
Vladimir Krasnozhen said that during the Youth Day he met a representative of a company developing electronic training systems for occupational safety and health, and received a demo version of a computer program for training welders. Vladimir plans to use the received materials for his graduation project.
According to Ulyana Baranova, participation in the Russian Labour Safety Week and victory in the competition open up new opportunities for development. Students gained experience speaking in front of an audience, confirmed their competence, and gained self-confidence.
Youth Day of the Russian Labour Safety Week is the largest event in the field of popularization of modern technologies in the field of labour protection, industrial and environmental safety for students. Its organizer is the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection of the Russian Federation, the operator is the Roscongress Foundation, and the co-organizer is the Reliable Shift Foundation.
The breakthrough “Smart Labour” training site is designed to improve labour safety and reduce the level of injuries on construction sites. The project “Modern educational technologies to ensure occupational safety in the construction industry” is being implemented at the site as part of the status of a federal innovation site received by SPbGASU in 2022.
