In 2022, the Committee for Urban Planning Policy of the Leningrad Region established an annual governor's competition "The Concept of Spatial Development of Municipalities". This year it was dedicated to the concepts of master plans for the historical settlements of the Leningrad Region with the development of a priority direction, namely the preservation and updating of historical and cultural heritage.
The competition was attended by both student teams and professionals. The presented works were evaluated by a jury, which included architects from Salekhard, Khabarovsk Territory, Moscow, Moscow, Ryazan, Sakhalin, Leningrad regions. The jury was headed by Evgeny Baranovsky, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Leningrad Region for Construction, Housing and Communal Services. Sergey Lutchenko, the chief architect of the Leningrad Region, a PhD student of the SPbGASU Department of Urban Planning, took part in the organization and holding of the competition.
Master's students of the Department of Urban Planning have participated in this competition for the second year in a row. As part of the program of the current competition, the department conducts practical classes on the course "Strategy for the spatial development of cities", after which the most interesting ideas are offered by teachers for unsupervised completion, taking into account the requirements of the competition. This time, 12 first- and second-year master's students presented five projects.
The concept of the development of the historical center on the example of st. Chkalov in Gatchina Open in high resolution
The project of the second-year master's student Elizaveta Medushevskaya “The concept of the development of the historical center on the example of st. Chkalov in Gatchina”, prepared in collaboration with architect Ivan Pryazhennikov, became the winner in the nomination “Master plan for a historical settlement with federal status with a population of 50,000 to 100,000 people”. The authors of the project were rewarded with a prize from the organizers of the competition, and with a certificate of honor from the Union of Architects of Russia and the Council of Chief Architects of Regions and Municipalities of Russia.
In the same nomination, the project "The concept of the development of the historical center of Vyborg - Vyborg Kronverk" by second-year master's students Natalia Avlasevich, Anna Iskul and Arina Russkikh took third place. The authors of the project were also awarded the prize.

Letters of gratitude from the Committee for Urban Planning Policy were presented to the creative team consisting of second-year master's students Viktoria Runova, Elizaveta Guseva and Vladislav Odinets for the concept of the development of the city of Novaya Ladoga in the nomination “Master plans for a historical settlement from 5 to 15 thousand inhabitants”. A letter of gratitude was also received by Vasilisa Kalugina for the concept for the development of Parusinka Island in Ivangorod, presented in the same nomination.
For the active involvement of students in the competition, its inclusion in the educational process, creative contribution to the formation of a comfortable urban environment for the inhabitants of the Leningrad Region, the governor of the region Aleksander Drozdenko presented gratitude to the head of the SPbGASU Department of Urban Planning Yulia Yankovskaya and associate professor at the Department Svetlana Levoshko.
