SPbGASU held a week of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services, which included a series of events aimed at improving the professional competencies of students and popularizing specialties. Competitions, master classes, webinars, exhibitions, lectures and seminars by representatives of industry enterprises allowed future specialists to step into the profession, consolidate theoretical knowledge and acquire practical skills.

“All events were held on current topics, took into account the requirements of the modern industry, and therefore attracted the interest of both students of all years of study and industry enterprises. Thus, for a week, the faculty turned into an open and effective platform which demonstrated the achievements and capabilities of the university, the conditions for quality training for students, as well as the potential of the industry in which they would work. As practice shows, such events increase motivation to study and interest in the profession,” said acting dean of the Faculty Andrey Nikulin.

About program testing and information modeling

Students of the Department of Information Systems and Technologies highly appreciated the educational events. Thus, first-year and second-year students took part in the seminar “What is program testing and why is it important?”, at which Ekaterina Barkova, head of the bench modeling and complex testing department of STC Hi-Tech LLC, spoke about methods for testing software and hardware.

Senior students, master's and PhD students attended the webinar “Coordination of an information model as a basic process of achieving the goals of information modeling technology in a company” from the leading specialist of the computer-aided design systems department of the directorate for information systems of LSR LLC Aleksandra Masyonene. They learned about the life cycle of an information model, the process of coordinating the information model of a construction site. In addition, tools were studied that allow information modeling at various stages of the life cycle of a construction project.

The Department also organized an online competition “FEE&MS in persons” using neural networks. The most recognizable was the Department of Geodesy, Land Management and Cadastre: 89% of participants guessed it. The Department of Information Systems and Technologies was correctly guessed by 68% of participants.

Jung's experiment, unmanned vehicles and smart home

The week turned out to be just as busy at the Department of Structural Physics, Power Engineering and Electrical Engineering. Students listened to a lecture-demonstration “Light Wave Properties” by senior teacher Vladimir Dronov.

“The students were shown Jung's experiment, which became one of the first laboratory experiments in history to prove the wave nature of light. During the experiments, the phenomena of interference, diffraction and polarization were considered, experiments were demonstrated on observing interference from two sources, diffraction at one slit and a diffraction grating, polarization of light when light passes through two polaroids,” explained Vladimir Mikhailovich.

Professor Igor Prutchikov gave an open lecture “Robotic life support safety systems for critical urban municipal infrastructure facilities in emergency situations.” The relevance and socio-economic importance of construction robotization, the objective need to develop robotization on an integrated basis of automation technologies, mechanization and electrification of construction and urban facilities were noted.

“In addition, we examined the most promising areas of construction robotization related to the development of special unmanned aerial vehicles, transport robots and robotic manipulators. We noted the promise of robotization of TIM technologies in construction. The students saw the robotic systems for the safety of life support for municipal, social and urban infrastructure facilities under construction developed at the department,” emphasized Igor Prutchikov.

Associate professor Aleksandr Epishkin gave an open lecture-demonstration for students “Advantages and disadvantages of a smart home for the average user.” During the lecture, methods for building automation and control systems, which are commonly called a smart home, were presented. The main goals and objectives that are implemented in the organization of residential and industrial buildings and structures by the considered automation systems were also revealed. Listeners showed keen interest in this topic and asked many relevant questions.

In addition, a lecture-demonstration “Physical experiment: history and transformation” took place, which involved teachers Yulia Leontyeva, Tatiana Rogozhina, Ekaterina Kulinskaya, Timur Mellekh and Vladimir Shabalin. They demonstrated to first- and second-year students the operation of educational laboratory equipment of the second half of the last century and their modern analogues.

The public events of the FEE&MS week also included an exhibition of personal protective equipment, organized by JSC TD “Vostok-Service”.
