New roads and bridges to be built in St. Petersburg
On the eve of the Day of Road Workers, Sergey Rumyantsev, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for the Development of Transport Infrastructure of St. Petersburg visited SPbGASU. The guest told students about the work of the Committee and about future city projects.
“St. Petersburg has nearly 3,500 roads and a record number of bridges - 432. Of these, 18 are draft bridges, which, of course, we are proud of. At the same time, the Northern capital is actively developing at the account of commissioning new facilities. The public road system is also growing,” said S. S. Rumyantsev.
What did the lecturer tell the students?
The Committee for the Development of Transport Infrastructure of St. Petersburg conducts extensive activities: it is responsible for the construction of roads, bridges, metro facilities, as well as overpasses and tunnels; it carries out repairs, overhauls, reconstruction of roads; contains and develops technical means of traffic management, such as traffic lights and signs.
About the metro
Metro is the priority object for the St. Petersburg Government. St. Petersburg Metro is the second largest in Russia and one of the twenty largest subway systems in the world. The total length of all tunnels exceeds 124 km and has 72 passenger stations. A peculiarity of the St. Petersburg "subway" is its great depth: on average, it is 50-60 meters. Three new stations on the purple line have recently been opened. The diameter of the tunnel in this section is 10.6 m. The large diameter allows to organize double-track traffic in one tunnel and place all the necessary communications in it.
About private investments
Projects involving private investment have great prospects. An example of such project is the Chizhik (thistle-finch) tram in the Krasnoselsky district of St. Petersburg. Attraction of private investment can reduce the burden on the budget, while the city receives the necessary facilities for use. The Western High-Speed Diameter, which stretches over 70 km, is successfully operating. The next mega-project will be the latitudinal highway of high-speed traffic with the passage across the Neva. The highway will have 11 junctions and the total length of 27.4 km, while its capacity will amount to 170 thousand cars per day. More than 14 km of the new highway will pass within the city. The new facility will help reduce the load on the road network, redirect the intensity of freight and passenger flows.
About bridges
Construction of two large bridges is in the plans. One of them will be part of the latitudinal high-speed road and the other will be located on the Stachek Avenue to Energetikov Avenue highway. The bridge will have a draw span and its length will be 483.5 m.
About bike lanes
In order to create a well-balanced transport environment and popularize no-car traffic, a network of bicycle routes is developing. Today, 28 bike paths with the total length of 107 km are already available. Over the past few years, the length of cycle routes has increased by 65 km. It grows annually: in 2019, 7 new cycle routes with the length of about 32 km will be equipped. Seven more cycle routs are also in the plans.
