On 6 June, the SPbGASU Department of Intercultural Communication awarded the winners of the first intra-university English language Olympiad “New Language Horizons”, which was held in April-May. 237 students of various specialties took part in the Olympiad.

The qualifying and semi-final rounds were held in person, while the final round was held remotely. 27 students who showed the best results in the first two rounds qualified for the final stage. As part of the third (final) round, students completed a creative task by recording a video performance with a presentation on the topic “The role of English in my career”.

The winners of the Olympiad were Daria Dubtsova, Tatiana Lazareva (both Faculty of Architecture) and Sofia Myagkaya (Faculty of Economics and Management).

Second place was shared by Nazrin Akhundova, Anna Mitrofanova (Faculty of Architecture), Kirill Vakhmyanin (Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services) and Karina Reshetnik (Faculty of Civil Engineering).

Third place went to Regina Embulaeva (Faculty of Architecture), Vladislav Li (Faculty of Civil Engineering) and Daniil Trubnikov (Faculty of Automobile and Road Building).

According to the teachers of the department, the video presentations of the Olympiad finalists were distinguished by clarity of presentation, creative approach and demonstrated a high level of language skills of the participants.

At the award ceremony, welcoming speeches were made by the Head of the Department of Intercultural Communication, Elena Selezneva, and the Professor at the Department, Elena Chirkova, who thanked everyone for their active participation and noted that learning English is important for the professional development of students.

“Learning a foreign language “breaks your brain”, makes you think differently, and gives you additional opportunities to look at familiar things. A foreign language structures thoughts, and its mastery is useful even if it is not actively used,” noted Elena Chirkova.

We congratulate the students on their victory, thank everyone for their active participation and look forward to new events of the Department of Intercultural Communication!
