Qualifying round of the BIM championship took start at SPbGASU

SPbGASU annually holds a BIM championship. The current competition is the fourth for the university. The qualifying round started on November 25 at the SPbGASU Design Office at # 32 Rosensteina Street. This time The National association of members performing engineering surveys and design documentation became a co-chief of the championship.

Students participating in the BIM championship

As compared to previous years, the scope of the project has increased.

✔ The number of participants doubled: eight teams of eight people each

✔ The number of competencies has been expanded. Today, each team, in addition to an architect, designer, developer, specialist in heating and ventilation, water disposal and water supply, also comprises a surveyor, a specialist in electrical wiring and fire safety, and a coordinator

According to Alexander G. Chernykh, the head of the Department of Metal and Timber Structures, the new conditions are closer to reality.

“It is important to remember that construction is a complex collective work. For example, during the construction of the Opera House in Oslo, Norway, the number of specialists of various competencies was counted in tens”.

Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services Inna I. Sukhanova, in her turn, emphasized that such a cooperation experience is essential for students, because the ability to work in a team will be functional to them after graduation from the university:

“The BIM championship is a mini-model of how your professional life will be arranged: it will contain debates and the search for effective solutions.”

Inna Sukhanova also added that often the students, who participated in the competition in one team, were ready for further joint projects.

One of the sponsors of the championship was WizardSoft, a software company. Congratulating the participants at the opening, its representative Pavel Lukyanov, deputy director for technical issues, noted the relevance of the championship in connection with global changes in the global economy:

"We can now talk about a digital revolution, which is reflected in the construction, including domestic."

As an incentive, WizardSoft, together with the Institute of Applied Automation and Programming, is going to award the winners with certificates for taking BIM-estimator distance learning courses. Students who take the 4th, the 5th, and the 6th places, will also receive certificates for taking courses related to budgeting, rationing and pricing.

The open championship stage will be held from April 20 to April 26, 2020

How does the championship affect the future of the participants?

The BIM-championship allows mastering the skills necessary in modern construction.

For example, architect students of SPbGASU, who had passed through the BIM championship, took part in digital modeling of the 18th block in Kronstadt.

“In this project, it was not the BIM, but CIM technology that was used; that means, it was an information model of not a single building but of an entire settlement and its infrastructure,” said Alexander G. Chernykh.

Besides actual modeling the 18th block, the students took part in the so-called reverse building design, a joint work of SPbGASU and the Committee on Energy and Engineering.

The aim of the work was to create digital models of existing buildings. An example of such an object is the house at #3 Vavilova Street, which was scanned from the inside and out and translated into 3D. Another situation of real work is the Mega-Dybenko case. The company turned to the Smart City project office for a detailed survey of the building complex and the creation of a digital operation model.

✔ The experience gained has helped many participants of the past BIM championships in finding their jobs: employers are interested in young professionals with such competencies.

What one should know about the BIM technology

Digital modeling of buildings is the vector that will determine the future of the construction industry. BIM technology is a multifunctional and flexible system that operates with a large amount of information and makes it possible to trace the life cycle of a building already at the design stage. The innovation allows to make timely adjustments to the project, avoiding mistakes in the actual construction and, thereby, bringing the industry to a fundamentally higher level. Therefore, while studying at the university, students need to acquire skills in working with BIM software.
