SPbGASU at 100+ TechnoBuild International Forum and Exhibition

Representatives of SPbGASU took part in 100+ TechnoBuild 8th International Forum and Exhibition held on 5–7 October in Ekaterinburg.

100+ TechnoBuild is Russia's largest forum for the design, construction, financing and operation of high-rise and unique buildings of all purposes. It has been held annually since 2014.

The SPbGASU delegation included Sergey Mikhailov, Vice Rector for Education and Methodology Work, Inna Sukhanova, Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Municipal Services, Director of the Building Information Modelling Laboratory Denis Nizhegorodtsev, Head of the Department of Technosphere Safety and Director of the Centre for Occupational Safety and Health in Construction Vitaly Tsaplin, and specialist of the Centre Omar Shakshak.

The theme of this year's 100+ TechnoBuild was 'Dialogue between the Regions'. Marat Khusnullin, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Government, and Irek Faizullin, Russia’s Minister of Construction, Housing and Utilities, discussed the future of the construction industry at the plenary session with developers and regional authorities.

SPbGASU representatives took part in the roundtable discussion 'New Personnel for the Construction Industry' organised by the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering and the Russian Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities. Sergey Mikhailov and Denis Nizhegorodtsev spoke about the experience of project-based training in information modelling using the example of the BIM Championship of SPbGASU.

The essence of project-based learning is to bring the educational process closer to real-life professional practice: students develop projects in a team consisting of specialists of different profiles. Elements of project-based learning are used at SPbGASU both in teaching professional disciplines and in practical training. This method is the basis of BIM championships and student case competitions organized jointly with the university’s partner organizations.

BIM Championship contributes to improving students’ and professionals’ competencies in the field of BIM technologies, and enhancing graduates’ employability. The Championship is included in the list of events for awarding grants of the President of Russia to Master's degree students in 2021–2022 academic year.

Vitaly Tsaplin invited the roundtable participants to visit the SPbGASU exhibition stand showcasing the Smart Labour training centre. "Our project focuses on the main thing – protecting human life and health. We are ready for interaction and cooperation," he emphasized.

The SPbGASU stand attracted a lot of interest among the exhibition visitors: occupational safety and health is one of the most important topics for the construction industry today.

The University also presented the ‘Smart Labour’ computer programme developed on the basis of VR technologies for distance learning in an interactive environment. Vitaly Tsaplin says this kind of learning software is unique for Russia. It helps industry staff to develop a safe behavioural model and the culture of safe work, which meets the requirements of the VISION ZERO concept of injury prevention.

Smart Labour training facility was constructed within the scope of the Russian-Finnish project SAFECON ("Safe, Skilled and Productive Construction Sites"), which is part of the South-East Finland – Russia Cross-Border Cooperation 2014–2020 Programme funded by the European Union, the Russian Federation and the Republic of Finland.

"Participation in the forum and exhibition has allowed us to become better acquainted with the industry’s current needs and challenges, as well as to expand and strengthen our partnerships with the professional community," said Sergey Mikhailov.
