SPbGASU Master's Student Became the Winner of «ARCH Project 2020»

On December 15, the winners of the “ARCH Project” annual competition for architecture and design projects were announced at the new stage of the Alexandrinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. This year, the theme suggested by the organizers was "The Park City". The competition brought together participants from different places in Russia.

✔ The competition included four sections: Centre of Attraction, Big Break, Comfort Zone and Genius loci. Ilya Arzhnikov, a first-year Master's student at the Department of Urban Planning of Saint Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, became the winner in the category "Centre of Attraction". As a prize, he will receive an internship at the construction company “CDS” with a possibility of subsequent employment.

The participants’ task was to develop an area planning and improvement proposal for the central part of Pargolovo residential district in the north of St. Petersburg, being constructed by “CDS” Group.

Park alley in the centre of the new microdistrict is a place that connects various functional areas and unites residents. The project is developed according to the principles of landscape urbanism providing for multifunctionality, versatility, hybridity, permeability, accessibility, as well as the interconnection of the landscape, surrounding architecture and small architectural forms in the park.

The new park is a mobile space that can change depending on the season and current needs. The possibility of transformation is achieved thanks to free planning, modular park equipment that can be combined in various forms and placed in different zones, as well as due to the ability to adapt the park sites to different needs.

The park is fully “socially adjusted”, which means it meets all the basic public needs offering everyone an opportunity to choose their own convenient scenario: going through the park while hurrying to work, having a coffee or outdoor workout, meeting friends or taking a walk with children.

Design proposal: Café in the park

“It was the “Centre of Attraction” category, introduced this year, which made me decide to take part in this competition, as I am really interested in developing urban planning solutions. I think I have succeeded because of the specifics of my approach: in the park I’ve designed I avoid imposing any certain kinds of leisure, rather taking into account the needs of different groups of people, and what’s more, the project enables changing the space depending on the request, and this opportunity is achieved by simple means", Ilya told.
