The BIM-ICE project was approved for funding

The joint BIM-ICE project of SPbGASU and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences (Finland) of BIM Integration in Higher and Continuing Education was approved for funding within the fifth round of the Cross-border Cooperation Program “South-Eastern Finland - Russia 2014 - 2020”.

A joint project of Russian and Finnish universities has reached a new level.

The aim of the BIM-ICE project is to increase the level of knowledge of students and the professional community in the field of BIM technologies, to improve the quality of professional education that guarantees training of qualified personnel for the construction industry.

In March 2015, by order of the Ministry of Construction and Housing and Communal Services of the Russian Federation, the “Plan for gradual implementation of BIM technologies in the field of industrial and civil construction" was approved. According to the indicated plan, as of 2020, it will be mandatory to use information modeling technologies in the design, construction and operation of buildings and structures erected at the account of the RF budget. The need to use BIM-technology poses a serious challenge in student training. Now civil engineering universities must train specialists competent in information modeling.

— Yevgeny I. Rybnov,
SPbGASU rector

BIM-ICE is particularly relevant in the context of the implementation of the national “Education” project aimed, inter alia, at ensuring the global competitiveness of Russian universities.

According to Alexey Semenov, Head of the SPbGASU Department of Computer Science, the introduction of BIM in the educational and scientific process at SPbGASU took start several years ago. This process is associated with the transition to an unusual for many Russian universities system of interdisciplinary project-based training, when students of different areas of training and specialities must learn to work together, completing common projects.

The inclusion of interdisciplinary joint training in the educational process, as well as the transition to everything new and modern, requires not only a lot of organizational work, but also experienced teachers who are ready for such a transition. We have specialists from the industry at SPbGASU; many teachers have experience of working in design organizations where BIM technologies are already actively used. More and more teachers are undergoing advanced training in this area and striving to introduce the acquired knowledge into the educational process. The annual BIM-championship of SPbGASU also plays an important role in the development of BIM-technology. Incidentally, it is included as part of the BIM-ICE project.

— Irina R. Lugovskaya,
Vice Rector for External Relations

In the long-term prospect, the implementation of the BIM-ICE project will provide sustainable methodological support for introducing BIM in the educational process through the development of pedagogical methods and dissemination of information about the results of the project, creation of a database of training materials for the use of academics and professional community, as well as authorities of various levels.
