During the years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for open public spaces has become even more evident. Svetlana Danilova, Associate Professor of the SPbGASU Department of Architectural Environment and Landscape Design, presented a new study program 35.03.10 “Landscape Architecture”, which passed state accreditation in 2019. The curriculum includes such disciplines as botany, dendrology, chemistry, ecology, agricultural technology, phytodesign, content and protection of objects of landscape architecture, lighting design, landscape materials science, landscape construction, social interaction in the industry, hydroecology. In 2021, the first graduates of this program defended their thesis.
Nadezhda Kerimova, Associate Professor of the SPbGASU Department of AE&LD, raised the topical issue of the impact of landscapes on human health. According to the speaker, the traditional idea of the healing power of nature has received scientific confirmation in recent decades thanks to research in the field of environmental psychology, medicine and cognitive neuroscience. The listeners learned that for the healing effect, the continuous change of natural images, small green spaces for a quiet rest, tall trees, the crowns of which are visible from the windows, water sites or views of them, and other features of the landscape are important.

“This is one of the few conferences that are primarily dedicated to the comfort of the urban environment. Within the conference, we create a common, organic approach that accommodates different points of view. This time there was a lot of information about the improvement of public places. It is assumed that the public space should be multifunctional – so that a person who comes there can get a full range of recreational opportunities," Andrey Surovenkov, Acting Head of the Department of AE&LD said.
