The Eightieth Anniversary of the Breakthrough of the Leningrad Blockade

18 January marks the 80th anniversary of the breakthrough of the Leningrad blockade during the Great Patriotic War. On this day in 1943, the troops of the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts liberated Shlisselburg and the southern coast of Lake Ladoga. The besieged city received a land connection with the mainland and was saved from starvation. Breaking the blockade was a turning point in the battle for Leningrad, gave strength, bravery and courage to soldiers and citizents.
