The future of bridge structures is with information modeling

Employees of the SPbGASU Department of Motor Roads, Bridges and Tunnels took part in the International Conference on Russian and Foreign Technologies for Designing and Building Bridge Structures (organized by the IAFC), which was held on September 25-27, 2019 in Moscow. The senior lecturer of the department Dmitry A. Yaroshutin and the assistant professor the department Nikolay V. Kozak took part in the work of specialized sections devoted to testing and inspection of bridge structures and the use of BIM and BrIM (Bridge Information Modeling) systems at all stages of the bridge life cycle. They established working contacts with software developers on the possible implementation of BrIM programs in the educational process. Within the work of the “Monitoring and evaluation of the technical condition of bridge structures” section, modern developments were presented, including the use of wavelet methods to analyze the results of dynamic tests.

For the conference participants, a thematic tour was organized to the construction site of the unique Karamyshevsky Bridge as part of the North-Western Chord presently erected across the straightening of the Moscow River. This construction is the record holder in Europe for the length of the beam span superstructure of more than 200 meters long.

The topics of surveys and tests of bridges, assessing their reliability and resource, calculating actual dynamic parameters are fundamental for the scientific school of the MRB&T department. Over the years, under the guidance of Professor V.A. Bystrov, studies have been conducted at the department on the methods for assessing the real load of bridges.

Unlike building information modeling (BIM), which has already firmly established in the practice of design and construction, information modeling of bridges (BrIM), due to a number of reasons, is only now beginning its active expansion. At the conference, the updated Allplan Bridge program was presented and the midas CIM environment was announced; those claim to be a full-fledged information modeling tool for bridges of all types. At the moment, at the SPbGASU Department of Motor Roads, Bridges and Tunnels, as an experiment, student teams are developing information models of bridges in the Autodesk Revit “general type” construction programs. Their inability to solve engineering problems of modeling becomes apparent. Teachers of the department established working contacts with developers of modern software for the implementation of their products in the educational process. The use of such systems will help to establish high-quality work on interdisciplinary projects and increase the visibility of training materials.
