“Thew were all excited”

The Council of International Students of the University does a great job with foreign freshmen, helping them find friends, get to know St. Petersburg and take on the educational rhythm.

On September 25, 2019, one of the events developed by the Dean's Office for working with international students and the Council of International Students took place at SPbGASU: an international quest for foreign and Russian first-grade students.

Freshmen who came to our university from other countries and regions of Russia participated in the “stations” game, solved puzzles, completed various tasks, got to know the university and each other.

– About 40 Russian and foreign students took part in the quest, says the chairman of the Council of International Students, a fourth-grade student of the Architectural Faculty Devaraj Navindu. - Each station in the quest represented a country; students talked about its sights, treated freshmen to national dishes, performed national songs and dances.

Freshmen’s impressions

At our request, freshmen and organizers of the quest shared their impressions of the event.

“I came from the city of Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan,” said Margarita Kondratyeva, a freshman at the Faculty of Architecture. – I’ve studied at SPbGASU for three weeks and still know far from all the ropes at the university. The quest helped us get to know the university more closely, as well as learn some peculiarities of other countries: for example, at some stations we were treated to national dishes. At the Kazakhstan station, one could try bursaki, and at the Russia station, the participants tasted pancakes with honey.

Daniyar Sultanov liked the African dance performed by the participants of the quest at the "Africa" station.

The fourth-year student of the Faculty of Architecture, Munhabat Batbuyan, came from Mongolia. He was one of the organizers of the quest.

– Freshmen really liked the game. They gladly performed tasks, actively communicated with each other, and were truly excited, said Munkhabat Batbuyan.

Events that were prepared for foreign students

According to Devaraj Navindu, the Council of International Students begins to work with foreign students after they have just entered the preparatory department. For them, senior students conduct "night walks" to get the young people acquainted with St. Petersburg.

The Council of Foreign Students is planning to hold the Halloween party on October 31; SPbGASU Language Club members will also participate in it. And on November 4, foreign students along with their Russian fellow students will celebrate the National Unity Day. Also, weekly classes will be held with foreign first-graders who have difficulties with learning. Senior students, who have already adapted at the university and do well in all subjects, will take care of them.
