Maria Kolesova, assistant at the Department of Architectural and Urban-Planning Heritage, completed the research work “Evolution of order forms of facades of St Petersburg buildings in the works of A. I. Stackenschneider, M. E. Messmacher and M. M. Peretyatkovich” as part of a grant competition for implementation scientific research works by scientific and pedagogical staff of the St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering in 2023.
Analysis of the structure of the facade of the Russian Commercial and Industrial Bank (architect M. M. Peretyatkovich, 1912–1914). a) General silhouette solution of the facade; b) dividing the facade into accent and background planes; c) choosing the type of order execution; d) breakdown of horizontal divisions; e) breakdown of vertical divisions; f) design of the facade according to the “theory of architectural forms”
The work examines the features of the formation of facades of St Petersburg buildings, designed by key representatives of three style trends of the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries, from the point of view of the general compositional solution, the type of order construction and the characteristic features of the placement of the order in the structure of the facade. During the period under review, with the departure from classicist traditions in building design, not only the set of details used by architects changed, but also the entire compositional structure of the facade. A special role in this is played by the placement of the order in the structure of the facade during the period of early eclecticism, late eclecticism and neoclassicism of the early 20th century.
The column order on the facades of St Petersburg buildings has undergone changes throughout the history of the city's architecture. Not only the proportions and individual elements of the order change, but also their components - architectural fragments used in various stylistic directions during the period of early eclecticism, late eclecticism and neoclassicism of the early 20th century. Architects turn to the heritage of previous historical periods, quoting exactly or interpreting the order on the facades of their own buildings in their own way. The interpretation of the order reflects the stylistic, creative, and philosophical ideas of the architect. Knowledge of the specifics of applying the order is necessary when studying, preserving and restoring historical buildings.
The research can be continued in the study of facades and their elements of historical buildings of other architects of the mid-19th - early 20th centuries in St Petersburg and other cities. In addition, the results of this study can be used in the restoration and adaptation of historical buildings in St Petersburg.
As a result of the research work, two articles were published in journals included in the list of the Higher Attestation Commission.
