According to the Concept for the Development of Historical Settlements, Support and Popularization of Cultural and Tourist Opportunities, Development of the Cultural Heritage Economy for the Period up to 2030, approved by the Russian Ministry of Culture, small historical settlements play a significant role in preserving the country's cultural and natural heritage, and developing tourism. At the same time, each small historical settlement has a unique set of characteristics that make up its spatial, historical and cultural potential. According to Anastasia Bergman, an assistant at the SPbGASU Department of History and Theory of Architecture, “identifying the “genetic code” of each small historical settlement can serve as the key to its revival.”

“I was interested in the topic of heritage preservation in the old Cossack villages on the Don. As part of a grant for the implementation of research work by SPbGASU scientific and pedagogical staff in 2023, I am developing a theoretical model of the architectural and compositional core of the historical and cultural framework of small historical settlements on the coastal territory of the Don River within the boundaries of the Rostov Region, ”said Anastasia Vladimirovna.
The work on the research included a large pool of field studies (including expeditions to the Don villages), the search and study of archival materials, on the basis of which the value characteristics of the historical and cultural framework of the Cossack villages were determined. The world experience in the preservation and development of small historical settlements was studied and systematized, on the basis of which methods of regeneration were formulated, taking into account the specifics of the location of small historical settlements on the coastal territory. The author's approach to identifying the historical and cultural framework of small historical settlements is formulated. According to Anastasia Bergman, the main result of her research is a theoretical model of the architectural and compositional core of the historical and cultural framework of small historical settlements on the coastal territory of the Don River in the Rostov Region.
An important part of the research work is participation in scientific events. In the process of working on the grant, Anastasia Bergman took part in the III Interregional Forum "World Heritage Sites: Achievements and Experience of the Regions", which took place on 6-7 July, 2023 in Pskov. The Forum was organized by the Committee for the Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites of the Pskov Region and the State Autonomous Cultural Institution of the Pskov Region "Research and Production Center for the Protection and Use of Historical and Cultural Monuments".

“I took part in this forum for the second time. This year, my report "Small historical settlements of the Rostov region: the potential for conservation and development" was devoted to an overview of the architectural, compositional and historical potential of the Cossack villages, the researcher said. – In the main part of my speech, I presented an analysis of these settlements from the point of view of their inclusion in the tourism framework of the region. At the end of my speech, conclusions were drawn about the prospects for preserving the historical and cultural framework and developing the tourism potential of the Cossack villages on the banks of the Don, taking into account modern trends in the development of settlements of this type".
