Today, 20 November, was the opening of the annual All-Russian TIM Championship at SPbGASU. This event attracts students with the opportunity to improve their skills in information modeling in the construction of real objects, and allows industry companies to evaluate these skills and take a closer look at novice specialists. Experts accompanying the teams will be able to improve their competencies in this area, since the championship includes educational webinars for them.
The SPbGASU TIM Championship in Building Information Modeling is held annually as part of the Federal Innovation Platform “Innovative Methodology for Forming Digital Professional Competencies of Students and Specialists in the Construction Industry” implemented at SPbGASU.
Greeting the participants, SPbGASU Vice-Rector for Continuing Education Viktoria Vinogradova emphasized that an event of this format allows us to identify the most promising and talented students from specialized universities, attract employers - industrial partners to the process of forming and mastering TIM competencies and improve the level of training of future specialists.
"This year, the championship is being implemented as part of an innovative educational project. From year to year, we try to improve the methodology of holding the championship and improve the quality of its organization. Participants will be able to demonstrate not only the level of their digital professional competencies, but also personal qualities that are important for every specialist in the construction industry. Another effect of the event is the formation of a professional expert community, which future specialists join. Moreover, the geography of participants and experts is impressive and confirms the interest in this event, making it more large-scale," she noted.
This year, the championship is attended by teams from the Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, Far Eastern State Transport University (Khabarovsk), Vyatka State University, South Ural State University (Chelyabinsk), Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Tomsk State University, Togliatti State University, Samara State Technical University, Tyumen Industrial University, Perm National Research Polytechnic University and St Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering.
Each participating team is, in fact, a project group consisting of an architect, a designer, a heating and ventilation engineer, a water supply and sanitation engineer, an estimator, and a TIM coordinator, which will design a movie theater for 500 visitors in six eight-hour working days. According to the assignment, the design site must be located in St Petersburg with the movie theater building, a parking lot, and small architectural forms on it. Each specialist in the team has their own professional tasks. Deviating from the competition requirements means distancing your team from the long-awaited victory, so the participants admit that in preparation for the championship they not only practiced their professional skills, but also carefully studied the competition conditions.
Konstantin Zelenkin, a first-year master's student in the field of "Computer technologies in assessing the safety of buildings and structures" at Perm National Research Polytechnic University, came to the championship for the first time and holds the position of design engineer on the team.
"I want to apply in practice all my knowledge and skills in the field of modeling the construction of buildings and structures, in the field of safety assessment and, in general, in the field of computing systems. We have a close-knit team, so there is hope for a good result," said Konstantin. He specified that he works in a company engaged in TIM technologies and TIM design, so he appreciated the practical effectiveness of this championship: the competition tasks are those professional tasks that are performed by industry specialists. Konstantin added that the industry willingly employs young specialists, teaches them the necessary skills, and welcomes their participation in such championships that are important for professional growth, which also stimulate motivation for career growth.
Polina Sutyrina, a student of the Faculty of Architecture of the Nizhny Novgorod State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering, notes that she intends to work in her specialty in the future, and therefore wants to gain her first and valuable experience at the TIM Championship.
"So far, my practical experience consists only of industrial practice. But during our studies at the university, we do teamwork, so I can imagine how to work in a group. The work schedule of the TIM Championship is not bothering either: we, students, are used to the designated deadlines for submitting work. The competition task is very interesting: I have not yet completed similar projects, but there are cool ideas, and we will definitely talk about them at the presentation on the last day of the championship," Polina said.
The Head of the Department of Structural Mechanics at Tyumen Industrial University, Petr Chepur, reported that the university’s students are participating in the championship for the third year in a row because they have seen its effectiveness in their own practice.
"Participation in the SPbGASU TIM Championship has a positive effect on both the subsequent employment of graduates and the prestige of the university, since information modeling is actively developing and promoting at the state level. New projects that are implemented using budget funds must already be designed in TIM. In addition, all stages of the construction cycle are being transferred to TIM everywhere. The SPbGASU TIM Championship has a multiplier effect: participants can meet potential employers, and subsequently confirm their experience of working on complex federal-level projects, which gives them confidence and increases the financial assessment of their work in the industry," noted Petr Chepur.
The TIM Championship will end on 27 November. On this day, its winners will be determined.
The general partners of the championship are the National Association of Surveyors and Designers (NOPRIZ) and the Metropolis company, whose main specialization is general design of civil engineering projects and industrial buildings, including in partnership with the best international and Russian architectural companies.
The championship's partners also included the architectural bureau "Semrén & Månsson", the companies "ROSTerm", "Wizardsoft", "VALTEC", "ASCON", "PENOPLEX", "SiSoft Development", the State Expertise Center, the company "Renga Softvea", and the Design Institute of Construction Acoustics.
