Coach Mironchuk Pavel I.

Basketball was created in 1890 by Canadian-American physical education teacher and innovative coach James Naismith (1861–1939).

The SPbGASU men's team was formed in 1993 with the arrival of coach Elena Melentyeva. The team's best result was 4th place out of 18 teams. In 1997, with the arrival of the coach - candidate for master of sports, referee of the International Federation of Basketball Associations (FIBA) A.P. Makhlin and former team player A.Yu. Fedorov, the team improved its skills, and was included in the top 10 teams from 40 universities of the championship St Petersburg.

The women's team was formed in 2006 by the efforts of the coaches - the master of sports in basketball, the judge of the republican category A. Yu. Fedorov and the candidate for the master of sports, the judge of the republican category in basketball A. A. Dyev.

Andrey Viktorovich Garanzha has been appointed head coach of the men's and women's teams since September 2021.

In the 2021/2022 season, both teams returned to the championship of the Student Basketball Association in the St Petersburg division, second league.

Boys and girls participate in the championship of St Petersburg among university students in basketball, streetball, in the championship of the Fitness and Sport Society (FSS) of the trade unions of St Petersburg and the Leningrad Region "Russia" for the Freshman Prize.
