Sport sambo
Sambo is a form of Russian martial arts that is utilized for self-defense, physical fitness, and competitions. It is an acronym for SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya which means “self-defense without weapons”. Its development began in the early 1920s.
The sambo club is the oldest sports section in our university. It was organized by D.S. Zaporozhtsev in 1951. In the 1960s–1980s its permanent leader was the master of sports of the USSR B.A. Slovtsov, who brought up several generations of masters of sports of the USSR: among them was L.F. Sergeev, who headed the section since mid-1980s, A. M. Katikov, who worked as a section coach for a long time. The club trainees were: masters of sports of the USSR S. Bogdanov, A. Boriskov, S. Verbov, E. Karpenko, S. Kiselev, V. Pak, I. Romanenko, A. Fedyunin, B. Khamkhokov, I. Chipizubov, V. Shemeryankin, V. Schinov, A. Yagodnikov, as well as many candidates for master of sports and athletes of the 1st category.
The combined team of LISI (now SPbGASU) is a multiple winner of the Leningrad sambo championships among students. Until 2016, the club of sport sambo was headed by the master of sports of the USSR L.F. Sergeev (1940–2016).
Besides, the combat sports club have developed other martial arts: freestyle and classical (Greco-Roman) wrestling under the guidance of a coach, master of sports of the USSR V.E. Petukhov and, since 2010, coach V.V. Volsky; judo and jiu-jitsu under the direction of L. F. Sergeev; combat sambo - since 2000, under the leadership of L.F. Sergeev; mixed martial arts (also MMA, i.e.mixed martial arts) - since 2016, under the leadership of S. M. Til.
Sports achievements
- since 2008, the SPbGASU team in combat sambo has been a regular winner of the St Petersburg championships among students;
- individual champions: D. Butaev, S. Verbitsky (twice), M. Dzhenetov (four-time all-time champion in 2013–2016), D. Kolotov, I. Miminoshvili, V. Mochalov, R. Penkov, S. Radivilov , Ya. Skachkov, A. Stepanyan, A. Torgovanov (twice), R. Uzunyan;
- multiple winners of the championships of St Petersburg among students: S. Aliev, D. Grigoryan, A. Pagaev, T. Tuyaa;
- the standard of the master of sports of Russia was fulfilled by: S. Verbitsky, D. Goncharov, R. Penkov, S. Radivilov, A. Shestopalov;
- M. Dzhenetov became twice the master of sports of Russia: in sambo and in MMA.
