1929

• The Department of Architecture was established. It focused on teaching civil, agricultural and industrial architecture, architectural orbs, and architectural and constructive design.

1931

• The department’s spheres were reduced to constructive development of academic projects and teaching relevant courses for students of all specializations. A laboratory of architectural engineering and an architecture classroom were established in affiliation with the department.

1945-1955

• The academic staff developed new courses: “Industrial Architecture”, “Introduction to Construction Engineering”, “Theory of Design”. A series of researches on the design and engineering structure of large shopping centers in civic buildings, analysis of residential premises design, and analysis of ceramic and metal shingle roofs were implemented by the department’s teachers.

1969

• The department concentrated on mastering new methodology for teaching students of engineering specializations; the approach was based on the connections between architectural, compositional, and constructional characteristics of civil and industrial buildings. The accent was made on creative thinking, spatial awareness, and search for nonstandard, innovative solutions in architecture and construction.

1979-1994

• Scientific research was intensified at the department stipulated by the needs of the city. A new specialization of conservation engineers was established at the department in connection with activation of restoration works in St. Petersburg.

1994-2012

• The department established a new specialization of “Reconstruction and Restoration of Architectural Heritage”. The role of postgraduate studies was significantly increased. In 2005, the Department of Architecture got the same name as the new specialization, and in 2012 it was divided into two independent units: the Department of Architectural and City-Planning Heritage and Department of Architectural and Engineering Constructions. 
• The latter one maintains traditions of the Department of Architecture. The department’s staff teaches courses for students of practically all SPbGASU specializations and educational directions. The core disciplines are “Constructions of Buildings of the Historical Urban Development”, “Architecture”, “Architecture of Civil and Industrial Buildings”, “Basics of Architecture and Construction Structures”, “Building Constructions”.
