• A soil testing section was established at the Institute by initiative of professors N.N. Aistov and V.V. Evald.

1929

• The soil testing section was transformed into an independent Laboratory of Soil Science and Mechanics.

1933

• The Laboratory of Soil Science and Mechanics was transformed into the Department of Foundation Engineering.

1950

• The Department of Foundation Engineering merged with the Department of Soil Mechanics established at the Institute in 1940. The new division was named the Department of Foundation and Soil Engineering.

1992

• The Department of Foundation and Soil Engineering was renamed into the Department of Geotechnics.
