Faculty of automobile and road building has a long history. Training of specialists in road building has been considered of great importance since the period of School of civil engineers. A separate division of road building was founded in the Institute of civil engineers in 1905 and five years later in 1910 first specialists graduated from the Institute.
Modern history of the faculty started on October 7, 1947 after a big interval. After the Great Patriotic War there arose a demand for renovation and development of the destroyed roads and bridges of the country, 135 second and third year students of Moscow state automobile and road building institute were transferred to Leningrad civil engineering institute for accelerated training of road building engineers.
Faculty of automobile and road building continued training of specialists which started in 1930-1940 in Leningrad automobile and road building institute (closed in 1940) and today it is considered its successor. Most professors and teachers of the former Leningrad automobile and road building institute worked at the automobile and road building faculty of Leningrad civil engineering institute. Among them there were great scientists and organizers of production processes V.A. Gastev, N.A. Bukharin, V.K. Kachurin, V.A. Kochmar, A.M. Kriukov, M.N. Lebedev, M.A. Masino, G.P. Peredery, I.M. Rabinovich.
The faculty suffered numerous structural modifications: till 1960it was called automobile and road building faculty, later in 1960-1972 mechanical and road building faculty which in 1972 was divided into two faculties: mechanical and road building. In 1991-1993 it was known as the faculty of automobile and road building, in 1993-2006 it was called Institute of automobile and road building and since September, 2006 again the faculty of automobile and road building.
