Faculty of environmental engineering traces one’s history back to sanitary and technical faculty established in 1905 at the Institute of civil engineers and prepares specialists in developing, designing and exploitation of complex services, creation of comfort environment conditions, supply of water, heat and gas in residential and industrial buildings as well as in protection of environment from human intervention.

Training of specialists with a higher education in sanitary and technical services is carried out since the end of the 19^th century in our university. Since then alumni of the Institute of civil engineers having a higher education could work as an architect, civil engineer, plumbing engineer. In the end of the 19^th – beginning of the 20^th century it became necessary to provide more profound specializations due to demands of the developing industry and due to centralized water and heat supply. It is the time when in the Institute of civil engineers there were founded specialized chairs, then education programmes were developed and the faculty was established – the faculty which provides specialists with higher education in technical systems aimed at setting a comfortable environment in buildings, industrial structures and inhabited places.

In order to provide training of high quality to specialists the Faculty of environmental engineering and municipal services has all necessary training laboratories with modern equipment (laboratories of water conditioning and purification, water chemistry and microbiology, heating and ventilation, gas supply, pydrology, physics and chemistry). At the faculty there is a multimedia center of common use which provides both elementary computer skills as first courses and specialized skills necessary for writing course and degree projects. Moreover there are computer classes at the chairs of applied mathematics and informatics, and physics where students can fulfill calculation and laboratory works. 

At the faculty there is 81 professor, 19 of whom have a D.Sc. degree (19 professor academic titles), 52 of them a PhD degree and an associate professor academic title. At the faculty there is also one corresponding member and one councilor of the Russian academy of architectural and building sciences, five members of public academies. Amount of students receiving education at the faculty constitutes 721 student, 9 of them are from the CIS, Vietnam, Cambodia, Morocco and other countries. In addition to basic educational activity professors and teachers of the faculty of environmental engineering and municipal services work in the Institute of advanced training and retraining of specialists of saint Petersburg state university of architecture and civil engineering, popularize most up-to-date scientific and practical achievements at Saint Petersburg companies and organizations of other cities of Russia and the North-Western region. The faculty also carries out professi onal orientation activity in schools. Scientists of the faculty work upon applied and fundamental scientific researches.
