The high research potential of the Department made a solid foundation for fundamental studies which, in their turn, provided for successful implementation of major practical projects. Research studies at the Department were consequent out in such areas as “Environmental Safety of Russia,” “Drinking Water Supply,” “Bio Technologies,” and “Aquaculture.” Applied research projects were carried out at the account of winning tenders and signing contracts on their basis with major civil engineering structures, such the St. Petersburg Committee for Urban Development and Architecture, GUP Vodokanal, Cherepovets Steel Mill, paper mills, oil refineries, etc.
The department maintains strong scientific relations with Russian and foreign construction and technical universities in such cities as Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod, Vologda, Tyumen, Tomsk, Khabarovsk, Novosibirsk, Chelyabinsk, Kyiv (Ukraine), Minsk (Belarus), Kishinev (Moldova), Odessa (Ukraine), Warsaw, Gdansk, and Glivitsy (Poland), Mikkeli (Finland), Brno (Czech Republic). The Department has tight working relations with leading R&D institutions: VNIIvodgeo, Academy of Municipal Infrastructure, Center for Environmental Safety of St. Petersburg, SUE Vodokanal of St. Petersburg, etc.
